Salut! Welcome back to another grammar lesson on The Languages Kitchen. These past few weeks we've been tackling some past tenses. After a first quick look at both the Passé composé and the Imparfait and their use, in this lesson, we'll be concentrating more on when to use which tense. We'll also have a look at some signal words that will help us decide which tense to choose.
When to use the Passé composé and when the Imparfait?
Passé composé
- actions that happened suddenly, sometimes interrupting another action in the past.
La sonnette a sonné.
- mentioning that an action took place.
La semaine dernière, il a rencontré sa fille.
- a completed one-time action in the past.
J'ai couru le marathon de Londres.
- actions occurred in the past in a sequence.
Martine est allée à la cafétéria et elle a rencontré Matilde.
- new action interrupting an ongoing action.
Pendant que je regardais la télé, la sonnette a sonné.
Imparfait
- description of how a situation was in the past.
Le coucher de soleil sur la plage était incroyable.
Son petit ami avait un chien.
- emphasis on the passing or progression of an action.
Elle passait tous ses journées avec sa grand-mère.
- emphasis on a repeated action in the past.
Tous les lundis, j'allais au cours d'aérobic.
- actions occurring simultaneously in the past.
Pendant que je cuisinais, mon frère faisait un dessert.
- a new action interrupted an already ongoing action.
Pendant que je regardais la télé, la sonnette a sonné.
Signal words that will show when to use the Passé composé and when the Imparfait
Use the Passé composé with any of the following (or similar) signal words
immédiatement
tout à coup
à ce moment-là
en 2010
hier
le mois dernier
ensuite
alors
après
Use the Imparfait with any of the following (or similar) signal words
tous les semaines
chaque jour
toujours
ne … jamais
fréquemment
le vendredi
d’habitude
parfois
