I'm lucky enough to have been able to travel to quite a few different places around the world, especially in Spain, Italy, and their various islands. However, I'm always seeking new places to visit. Reading through different travel blogs, I've heard a lot of positive things about the island of Santorini. That's how I fell in love with this island and went on a dreamy holiday in this magnificent island. In fact, it is now my officially favourite place in Europe and I would happily go back over and over again!
I love everything about this island. Apart from the impressively beautiful whitewashed buildings and the typical blue coloured domes, Santorini has a lot more to offer. If for a while you followed me on social media, you would realise that I’m a huge fan of tasting new food, hence the reason behind the idea of this website; teaching languages through cooking and baking of various recipes. Whenever I visit somewhere new, I make it my mission to try as many typical foods as I can. On this aspect, Santorini definitely didn’t disappoint.
Back home on most mornings I'm too busy to have a proper breakfast. So I always look forward to finally having some time for a chilled breakfast whenever I'm on holiday. Each day was beautiful in Santorini so I used the opportunity to have breakfast on my balcony, with a beautiful view of the caldera.
I still had my usual cup of strong coffee but I also added a glass of fresh orange juice, a bowl of fruit with Greek yoghurt and tasty Greek honey, and bread with marmalade. It was such a colourful and tasty breakfast. I loved it so much I had it everyday!
After a swim or an excursion around the island, I always looked forward to lunch. Santorini restaurants offer the most amazing starters! I highly recommend the tomatokeftédes, dolmades, fava and the Greek salad - delicious! This was pretty much my lunch every day, together with a bottle of Mythos or sometimes a Red Donkey (local Greek beers). Most times lunch was at the On The Cliff Spiliotica cafe bar, one of the lovely restaurants in Imerovigli an amazing view over the Caldera.
Let's talk about ice cream! Whenever I go on holiday, especially when the weather's quite hot, I always look for a great spot to have a delicious ice cream. Santorini offers some great instagrammable spots to go get ice cream. The one that had the best reviews on TripAdvisor and caught my eye is Lolita's. It's a very cute tiny space with the sweetest bicycle at the front of the shop. After spending a few hours roaming around the streets of Oia, the ice cream was just was what I needed to cool down.
At dinner time, I looked forward to going to a different restaurant every night so as to taste different foods offered on this lovely island. In these nights, I tasted some of the most amazing food I've ever tasted and I will definitely be trying to recreate some of these foods back home.
The first night I dined at a lovely Greek restaurant in Imerovigli called Mezzo. I had the most incredible tomatokeftédes (fried filled tomato balls). It was the first time I tasted these and it definitely wasn't going to be my last! They were absolutely exquisite. For my main, I decided to go with something I had never seen paired together before.
It was intriguing to see how this combination would work and I was definitely surprised at this amazing plate of risotto with prawns and strawberries. They were heavenly.
I've also visited a French restaurant in Imerovigli called La Maison, which served the most amazing French food I've ever had. Unfortunately, I didn't manage to get any amazing food pics as it was very dark on the terrace, but I can assure you it looked and tasted amazing.
One afternoon, I went on a wine tour. I normally like to go on these kinds of tours as you get to taste the places' best wine, which I love and also find out which are the best and less touristic places to go to for a bite to eat. It was such a nice experience and I also got to know some people that also lived in the UK.
If you're starting to get to know me a little bit by now, you'll know that two of my greatest passions are drinking wine and watching sunsets. In Santorini, you can have both in abundance.
During the wine tasting tour, it was amazing seeing the amount of good wine produced on this island. When seeing some of the vineyards, I was very sceptical as the fields looked extremely dry. But, going on this very interesting wine tour, I learnt a lot of new things and also tasted a lot of typical great wines from the island. The most common grape is the Assyrtiko grape, which grows in a very dry land (Santorini has the perfect weather for it).
I took this photo on another one of my favourite evenings I spent in Santorini. This evening most probably tops some of the best sunsets I've seen in my life. The sun going down over the Caldera view was simply amazing. It was such a beauty seeing all the different colours in the sky. I even say a guy proposing to his girlfriend (soo romantic!!) And what could go better with that kind of view than being in one of the best wine bars I've ever been to, Heliotopos Hotel wine bar, with a glass of white wine and my fave, a cheese platter. I genuinely cannot recommend this place enough and I cannot wait to have the opportunity to go back. The food was divine and the staff so polite and helpful. It was such a magical evening.
