Passé composé - A lesson on the past tense in French. In this lesson, you will find both regular and irregular verbs and how the past tense is worked out in French.

Le Passé composé est utilisé pour décrire une action achevée qui s'est produite dans le passé. Avant de vous plonger dans cette leçon, assurez-vous d'abord de connaître les verbes Être et Avoir au présent, car vous en aurez besoin pour composer le passé composé. Vous pouvez trouver cette leçon ici.

The Passé composé is used to describe a completed action happened in the past. Before immersing yourself in this lesson, make sure you first know the verbs Être and Avoir in the present tense as you will need them to compose the past tense. You can find that lesson here.

To form the passé composé, you need to have two verbs: être or avoir in the present tense plus a second verb called the participe passé (past participle).

The majority of verbs will use Avoir in the present tense. However, there are still a few using Être; reflexive verbs and some verbs of movement.

OU/OR

There are always some exceptions and the following are the most common exceptions when using the passé composé.

Here are a few examples on how to compose the passé composé using both être and avoir. Have a closer look at the verbs using être as they change their endings according to the person (masculin/féminin, singulier/pluriel). This doesn't change with the verbs using avoir.

Have a go at putting into practice what you just learnt in this lesson with the worksheet attached to the link below.
