A typical French breakfast consists of a cup of coffee and an orange or grapefruit juice. Then, the main food consists of viennoiseries, baguettes, tartines, spreads and fruit.
Salut!! I hope you've all been enjoying these past few weeks' French recipes. Today I have something a little different for you. Instead of the usual recipe for one dish, I wanted to share the preparation of a French breakfast. I got this idea when a few weeks ago, I was going through some old photos from Toulouse and saw the lovely breakfast I was having in a cute café in the sun. Hence, decided to plan and recreate something similar to that breakfast.
Since in the UK at the moment it's not that sunny, I decided to set this breakfast in bed. I'm normally always in a hurry during the week, so I never really have the time to enjoy breakfast. I decided to have a lazy Sunday morning, so the breakfast was perfect on this occasion.
Usually, a typical weekday French breakfast is quite quick and simple. It's normally a coffee and one of the many marvellous pastries the French are so proud of. However, in the past few years, it's becoming more trendy having brunch.
When the French sit down for a proper breakfast, they have some savoury and sweet things. Therefore, in this post, I'm recreating this more all rounded breakfast for you to enjoy reading through and recreating for your own lazy Sundays.

What do we need?
- a baguette
- small bread rolls
- butter
- jam
- honey
- two/three oranges
- croissants
- pain au chocolat
- some coffee/tea/hot chocolate
What does the French breakfast consist of?
Le pain
The variety of French bread is huge, however, the most common and popular one for breakfast is the 'baguette'. It's a long, thin loaf with a crispy crust and a soft inside. It's probably also one of the most known bread around the world.
In addition to the baguette, French usually have the 'tartines de pain' with their breakfast. These are small rolls of bread, very similar to the baguette in texture. With their bread, the French spread butter and/or their jam of choice.
Le jus de fruits
This is usually a fresh juice. Normally, it's either an orange juice or a grapefruit juice for those that like something a little sourer tasting. For my breakfast today, I went for an orange juice that's both delicious and good for you.
Les fruits
For today's breakfast, I decided to use a variety of dark coloured fruit so as to create a reddish shade in the layout. You can have any fruit you enjoy the most. It's always important to have some, especially as the next part of the breakfast is not that healthy but still a must as they're so delicious.
Les viennoiseries
These have to be the most popular part of the French breakfast and probably also the most well-known around the world. Everyone associates these pastries with French breakfasts. The 'viennoiseries' take the form of butter croissants, pains au chocolat, brioches and even raisin bread. For today's breakfast, I went with my two faves; croissants and pains au chocolat.
Beurre, Confiture et Miel
These are the most commonly used spreads during a French breakfast. Butter and jam are usually spread on the tartines and baguettes, while the honey is drizzled on fruit. I went for a strawberry jam to spread on my tartines and a drizzle of honey on my bowl of fresh fruit.
Le café
Last but not least, the French love their coffee probably as much as the Italians. A nice strong coffee is the last piece of the puzzle to get this amazing breakfast. However, you might prefer having a tea or a hot chocolate instead.
Planning and recreating a typical French breakfast was so much fun. Ok, the location isn't as nice as one of those cute French cafés but I think it's quite cute having breakfast in bed every now and then. I was very happy to finally get a good varied breakfast and I will try keeping this tradition of having breakfast in bed at least on some lazy Sundays.
Make sure to try this breakfast and stop to chill for a few minutes and enjoy this goodness. Comment down below if this is your kind of breakfast and which other breakfasts I should try. Enjoy! x
